Charlotte Area Voters Give Solid Stamp of Approval to $477 Million Bond Campaign

Charlotte-Mecklenburg voters overwhelmingly approved a $477.2 million bond package that will improve the community's roads, neighborhoods, parks and recreational facilities, and affordable housing. Carolina PR managed the campaign communications and supported the Charlotte Chamber and campaign committee.

"Carolina PR was an integral part of the passage of bonds on the 2008 ballot," said Natalie H. English, Senior Vice President, Business & Education Advocacy, Charlotte Chamber. "As a part of the My Community Bonds campaign, Carolina PR helped develop a strategy to overcome significant concerns regarding the economy and the lack of attention on the bond issues. Bonds for parks, roads, affordable housing and neighborhood improvements were each approved by more than 60% thanks to their contribution."

A resounding 62 percent of Mecklenburg County voters approved a $250 million park bond that will bring new parks, improvements to existing parks, land conservation, expanded greenways and new recreational facilities throughout the county.

Charlotte residents were asked to vote on three additional bond issues for roads, neighborhood improvements and affordable housing projects. Again, the bonds passed by large margins, with 74 percent in favor of a $170.2 million road bond, 70 percent in favor of the $47 million neighborhood improvement bond, and 63 percent in favor of the $10 million affordable housing bond.

Carolina PR developed the campaign communication strategy, promotional materials and ad campaign that included traffic spots on local radio stations, endorsement in print media and outdoor billboard advertisements in nine high traffic areas in the Charlotte area. The online campaign included creating a web site, web-based advertising and digital grassroots outreach.

New mobile billboards enabled volunteers to be highly visible at community events by wearing 24" x 36" backlit framed posters, one for each bond issue.
